Rodney Carney
6-7, 205 lb senior SF out of Memphis

Rodney Carney is considered by many to be the best athlete in the 2006 NBA Draft. With a 6-foot-7 frame and speed and leaping ability passed on by his mother (a former track world record holder), Carney averaged 17.2 points on 43.6% shooting and 39% from long range with Memphis as a senior, despite playing just 27 minutes a night. He was named the Conference USA player of the year in helping lead the Tigers to a 30-3 record and a #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. |
Has the ideal height and athleticism of today's NBA two-guard. Tremendous athlete. Carney is blessed with outstanding leaping ability and speed, running the 40-yard dash in 4.5 seconds. Good shooter to boot who can get hot from long range -- improved from downtown in his senior season. Will throw down highlight-reel dunks. |
When he's off he's off, and can disappear during long stretches, as was the case in Memphis' loss to UCLA in the Elite Eight (2-12 from the floor, 5 points). While Carney can remind you of a McGrady with his athleticism, he has none of T-Mac's one-on-one skills. He is not a good ballhandler and not very creative in getting his own shot. Not a very good passer, committing more turnovers than assists in every season with the Tigers. Despite having all the athletic tools, he will need to improve on defense and as a rebounder. |
If the top of the draft goes about as expected, Rodney Carney is a player who could very well be a candidate for the Rockets at #8. The Rockets need a big guard who can shoot, and despite the obvious flaws in Carney's game, he could fit the bill. Also, Tracy McGrady's brother, Chance, was a teammate of Carney's at Memphis, and Carney has been working out with T-Mac and his personal trainer, Wayne Hall, at McGrady's Houston home. If anyone will know if Carney has what it takes, it will be McGrady. |
